Last week I set up my charitable bake sale to raise money for the British Heart Foundation. The British Heart Foundation is a charity very close to my heart, since I was diagnosed with Bicuspid Aortic Valve with Stenosis from birth. I shall be running a 10K in September to support the charity and thought it would be an opportune moment to raise some money and give people tasty treats in exchange.
I thought it was particularly important to raise awareness for congenital heart conditions. Most people are aware of heart disease but it doesn't seem to come with as much media attention such as larger charities like Cancer Trust. However congenital heart conditions and heart disease are one of the biggest killers in the UK. In most cases people assume it is the person in questions fault. "Oh they drank too much, they smoked too much" however this is not the case. Heart disease can become apparent in older life, even in those who would say they lived fairly healthy. Factors such as pollution from our commutes, the plastics polymers we ingest from polluted rivers all build up to contributing factors.
